Fire-retardant retention tanks for electrical transformers

Sanergrid® technology: fire-retardant retention tanks for ERT® and TRT-LHD transformers

This technological innovation addresses the critical fire risks associated with hydrocarbon pool fires in oil-filled electrical transformers through its fire-retardant retention tanks, known as ERT® and TRT-LHD. These devices, also referred to as smothering tanks or fire-retardant transformer tanks, combine effective passive safety elements that comply with fire safety requirements for electrical installations.

The technology behind the ERT® and TRT-LHD fire-retardant retention tanks from Sanergrid is designed to replace the gravel traditionally used beneath transformers. It offers significant advantages in terms of safety, efficiency, and environmental compliance.

Integrated fire-retardant systems: EXTICOV®-CCF™ and EXTICOV®-LHD®

All Sanergrid fire-retardant tanks are equipped with an integrated fire-retardant solution located at the top:

  • EXTICOV®-CCF™: Single-slope fire-retardant flaps using SONEC technology, specially designed to facilitate the passage of burning hydrocarbons into the tank.
  • EXTICOV®-LHD®: Robust fire-retardant grates based on PcP technology, suitable for demanding environments.

These systems are designed to:

  1. Accelerate the capture of burning hydrocarbons under the flaps or grates.
  2. Instantly smother the fire by depriving it of oxygen, preventing any spread of the fire.

Through this passive approach, two of the three elements of the fire triangle (heat and oxidizer) are effectively neutralized. This mechanism limits the temperature rise inside the tank and significantly reduces the risks of thermal runaway.

A proven and certified technology

  • Regulatory compliance: NFC 13-200, IEEE, CIGRE, and IEC recommendations.
  • Independent tests: Validated by laboratories such as CNPP (tests in 2009 and 2011), SP Boras (2015), and others.

By choosing Sanergrid’s fire-retardant retention tanks, you are opting for a reliable and certified solution to manage fire risks associated with oil-filled electrical transformers.
